between the lines

anything can be a poem

roses are red, remember?

just like these lines

& violets are blue.

so simple yet oddly complex

are you looking for a deeper meaning?

did you read between the lines?

analyzing every single word

why choose that verbiage?

what’s it mean to you?

i’ll overthink my life until it’s true.

Analysis:

Let me explain. I wrote this poem in a span of 15 minutes. I have nothing prepared to post tomorrow, which is when you’ll be reading this. I wrote the line ‘anything can be a poem’ and decided to ramble from there. I hate having writer’s block, so sometimes I’ll simply just write down one line and hope for the best.

Then I thought it would be fun to incorporate the simplest of poem I learned in elementary school with the line ‘roses are red.’ You can even follow this trend and find the second poem I hid within the first, which is ‘roses are red/and violets are blue/I’ll overthink my life until it’s true.’ I like to include little hidden messages and wonder if anyone ever truly decodes them…it’s a fun little game I play. I know all the questions make it somewhat obvious that this poem is about overthinking, but I feel as if you would only see the second poem if you overthink hard enough. So if that’s you I formally apologize, and if that’s not you then please don’t speak to me.

I even think it’s funny now that I’m trying to make this silly poem deeper than it needs to be, but the gift in poetry is that you get to overthink ever single word and take a deep dive into someone’s mind. Moral of the story, sometimes it’s just not that deep…ie read this poem for what it is, which is that I tend to overthink every aspect of my life.

Now do I believe this is my best poem? No, absolutely not, but does it give me something to post? Yes, yes it does and sometimes it’s better to have something than to be crippled by perfectionism. The overarching theme of this very short and simple poem is overthinking, which I constantly do. So even though I think this poem is poetic trash, I will still post it on my blog because I have nothing better coming out of my ass today.
